Today's Class and Tonight's Homework - Tuesday, May 30, 2017

Agenda:

Welcome to the last curriculum unit of the year!  "Speak" has been chosen to be our last piece of literature this year for many reasons.  It's relate-able, it addresses very real topics, it drives classroom discussions and allows for students to realize they aren't the same student that walked into TMS in August of 2016.

1) Survey Handout & Journal Entry
2) Discussion about "resilience" and "survival". (Both are themes found in the book.)
3) Foreward is read to the students - books are handed out.

Homework:  Read pages 1-12 (up to Espanol).  Come to class tomorrow with one deep thinking questions (a question that lends itself to discussion, YES or NO answer questions are not allowed and make a connection, either a text to self - text to text- or text to world,  to what you've read so far)

Agenda:

1) Journal Write -

2) Questions, Questions, Bueller?? - what else do you NEED for your research paper/presentation?

3) Folklore Introduction - Please see links below!!

FOLKLORE UNIT

We will be diving deep into this genre over the next week or so, and you need to fully understand each type of story in order to complete the culminating assessment.  Please take this first assignment seriously.

You will be taking your notes in OUTLINE form, set up like the example found in the link below.  My suggestion is that you do NOT try to create a blank outline first because you don’t know how much space you will need for each type of story. We will go over these notes and be adding information, so make sure you leave some blank space as well!  In the past, some students found it better to use a separate piece of paper for each type of story.  It’s up to you!

LINKS TO NEEDED PAPERS:
1.) Notes Reading
2.) Checklist and Outline Format/Example

HW - Go Home and read your research paper OUT LOUD....even better if someone is listening to you!  Everyone needs to do a Read Aloud edit....silly mistakes will be found when you do this!

If you are done with your Take Action, the remainder of time will be for independent reading!
