Today and Tomorrow's Class and Tonight's HW - 6/1/16, 6/2/16

Agenda:

1) "Speed Dating" - Last night for HW you were asked to find an artist and a piece of his/her work to print out and have with you today.  In 30 second phases,  you will rotate partners sharing WHO your artist is, WHAT piece you chose and WHY you gravitated towards that piece of art.

2) ART RESPONSE ASSIGNMENT
Supplies Needed:
~ Your printed painting (last night's homework)
~ A piece of blank white drawing paper
~ Blank lined paper from journal section of binder
~ Coloring supplies

Assignment Procedure:
(WEDNESDAY!!!) ~ Using the picture as a reference point, recreate it to your best ability on the blank white piece of paper.

(THURSDAY!!) ~ Next, label your picture using descriptive words and phrases (colors, textures, etc.).  I want to see SPARKLE words and phrases, so labels like "good use of color" or "kinda bumpy" aren't going to work.  If you need to consult the thesaurus, you may do so (either text form or online form - with permission)

(THURSDAY!!) ~ Using your list of descriptive words and phrases, write a 300 word (minimum) to 600 word (maximum) describing the art work you selected.  Spend some time addressing what the artist may have been feeling and/or why they painted this in this manner.  What is the painter trying to say?  Make sure you include the artist AND the title of the artwork in the topic sentence.

HW - Finish your art piece, color and/or shade it, for class tomorrow. If you didn't have a title for your art piece, find it tonight!

Welcome to the last curriculum unit of the year!  "Speak" has been chosen to be our last piece of literature this year for many reasons.  It's relate-able, it addresses very real topics, it drives classroom discussions and allows for students to realize they aren't the same student that walked into TMS on September 1, 2015.

3) Foreward is read to the students - books are handed out.

Homework:  Read pages 1-24 (up to Burrow).  Come to Monday's class with one deep thinking questions (a question that lends itself to discussion, YES or NO answer questions are not allowed, and make a connection, either a text to self - text to text- or text to world,  to what you've read so far)

Choose one of the open response prompts below to be yours to answer.  Have your topic sentence WRITTEN DOWN on a piece of paper for our Write Around activity tomorrow.

OPEN RESPONSE PROMPTS:
1.) One of the characteristics of a fairytale is that they are meant to teach the audience a lesson.  What is the overall theme that the Cinderella story is supposed to teach its audience no matter what culture's story you look at?  Support your response with specific examples from the stories you've interacted with?

2.) What is a motif?  Based on what you've experienced and all the work you've done with these three stories, what are some motifs that are present in the Cinderella stories around the world?  Support your answer with reasons or explanations from multiple texts.

Homework: You were given a choice of two prompts, both focusing on the topic of a motif.  Choose one prompt and write a thesis (topic) sentence for it on the back of the paper.  Have it with you for Thursdays class.

If choosing the poster - what angle will you take to make your topic interesting?  No dumping of bulletted information allowed on your exciting poster!

2) Chit Chat about the Take Action and Presentation Portions of your research assignment.

3) Folklore Introduction - please see links below!

FOLKLORE UNIT

We will be diving deep into this genre over the next week or so, and you need to fully understand each type of story in order to complete the culminating assessment.  Please take this assignment seriously.  There is to be absolutely NO talking during this activity so that you can put your full attention and focus on to this.

You will be taking your notes in OUTLINE form, set up like the example on the next page.  My suggestion is that you do NOT try to create a blank outline first because you don’t know how much space you will need between each type of story. We will go over these notes and be adding information, so make sure you leave some blank space as well!  In the past, some students found it better to use a separate piece of paper for each type of story.  It’s up to you!

LINKS TO NEEDED PAPERS:
1.) Notes Reading
2.) Checklist and Outline Format/Example

Agenda:

After a brief look at your research papers today, I addressed some issues that still needed to be taken care of.  This is your homestretch of writing and you are beginning to lose steam SO your pep talk in class today included the fact that you will be giving me your research paper this Friday!  I will then be able to edit your paper for it's FINAL rewrite.  You, as a writer, fall into one of the two categories below right now.

You either have to complete the TWO checklists below (because you didn't finish your HW last night tsk, tsk, tsk!) OR you only have to address checklist number two because you have been following directions every day :-)  No matter what, you have TWO NIGHTS to get this work done and to have a new updated version of your paper with you on Thursday. You're almost there....YOU CAN DO IT!

Checklist #1 (to be completed for Thursday!)
See yesterdays blog post for the checklist!!

Checklist #2 (to be completed for Thursday!)
Check font - (Times New Roman, size 12)
Check spacing -  entire paper is double spaced, no extra spaces in between paragraphs.  Indent at a new paragraph
Works Cited page - need to have at MINIMUM one website and one print source
Parenthetical Citations - If you are quoting in your body paragraphs you need to have (       ) at the end of the quote telling me who said it or where you found the quote!  If your parenthetical information is NOT there then you have officially plagarized information = 0!!  Don't do this!
Hook/Closing Sentences - still missing in some of your writing, use the cheat sheets, Hook/Grabber and Clincher, I gave you to complete this
No Talking Sentences or Banned Words Allowed!!! - any of these words in your essay?  Fix it please!
